Life update! Game Audio ahoy!
Finally getting round to a blog post!
So, as some of you might’ve heard, I was recently hired as a Junior Audio Engineer at Traveller’s Tales. For anyone who doesn’t know, they’re a UK-based developer with a fairly long history in the industry. In recent years, their hard work has lead to the creation of the highly successful LEGO series of games, including titles based on Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Star Wars and Batman. If you haven’t played these yet, I’d urge you to go and grab one of the recent titles, they’re incredibly fun!
Anyone who follows me on Twitter or reads this blog knows that this is a dream come true for me. I’m still reeling from the fact that I’ve landed what is essentially the start of my career straight out of uni. I’ve worked hard to get where I am but what I really wanted to say was a huge thank you to the incredible game audio community online as well as those who’ve advised me in the “non-internet” world. I won’t name names because I’ll miss people, but you all know who you are, and without you all I wouldn’t be half as knowledgable and probably wouldn’t have this job, so a massive thank you to all of you for the continuing support and advice over the past 18 months or so.
Now a bit about the job and what I’ve been doing.
Currently at TT, we’re finishing up LEGO: Harry Potter Years 5-7, for release before Xmas. As a massive fan of Harry Potter, it’s slightly surreal to be working on that IP on a day to day basis, but amazing at the same time. It’s looking to be one of the biggest LEGO games TT has put out so far, and should be an incredibly fun game to play, so make sure you grab a copy!
The other two sound designers I’m working with are both great guys with a lot of knowledge and talent, and I’m learning from them both on a daily basis which is awesome. Our audio programmer is a dedicated, talented individual too and is working on some tremendously exciting stuff for our in-house tech. One of the things I’m most excited about is really sinking my teeth into the intricacies of the implementation side of things here, and my colleagues are definitely great people that will enable me to do that.
I’m hoping to keep posting about what I’m learning without talking about specifics, so keep checking the blog for new posts. But I can’t convey my thanks enough to every single person that’s helped me get to where I am. You are all awesome!
I must at this point, offer exceptional thanks to my friend Ben Hill of White Paper Games and his girlfriend Claire, they let me sleep on their sofa for the first two weeks of my new job while I found a place to live and fed me amazing food every night. Go check out Ben’s projects and tell Ben he’s awesome from me!
